Sinopsis

This book contains lecture notes to study and/or to teach principal elements of statistical thermodynamics that applies methods of the probability theory to macroscopic thermodynamic systems. The starting point of this approach is provided by inter-particle interactions and the intramolecular structure of particles. The book provides explanation of the theory of Gibbs statistical ensembles. Thermodynamic properties follow from the partition function for each ensemble that reflects laboratory setup. Alternative approach based on the molecular distribution functions to arrive at thermodynamic properties is described as well. Majority of applications of these methods concerns the ideal systems of different kind. The equation of state that provides explanation of the concept of phase transitions, coming from the partition function for non-ideal fluids, is considered in a few examples. In addition, mathematical appendices are given to enhance pedagogical impact.
